CHEMICAL CLEAN SWEEP - Pre-registration required.

Any unwanted chemicals, herbicides, poison, or other hazardous wastes can be disposed of at this year's Clean Sweep. Household and Agricultural hazardous waste collection will be offered to homeowners, farmers and rural landowners in Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette counties . Businesses and local governments can also contract for waste disposal.

The Clean Sweep collection is in place to help improve safety in your home, at work and on the farm. Old or unwanted chemicals can create safety hazards to people and livestock through spills or container leaks. The program also helps reduce the risks of environmental contamination. Spills or leaks of even small amounts of chemicals or pesticides can contaminate drinking water or find it's way into rivers and streams.

The Clean Sweep will be held from 8:00 am till noon in each county over three Saturdays in September. Grant County Clean Sweep will be held September 11 in Lancaster at the Agriliance Agronomy Center, Iowa County's will be held September 18 in Dodgeville at the Iowa County Highway Department, and the Lafayette County program will be held September 25 in Darlington at the Lafayette County Highway Department. Residents may use the site that is most convenient for them.

Due to substantial budget constraints there will be a fee to all attendees based on the amount of chemicals being brought to the Clean Sweep site: 1 to 10 pounds will cost $10, 11 to 50 pounds is $40, 51 to 100 pounds is $60, and 101 to 200 pounds is $100. Any amounts above 200 pounds, please call for an estimate.

In order to attend, county residents must pre-register by calling the Grant County UW-Extension office at 608 723 2125 Iowa County Extension office at 608 935 0391, or the Lafayette County Extension office at 608 776 4820.
